How to Apply for the Post 9/11 GI Bill
Military students that meet the qualifications of the Post 9/11 GI Bill can follow
these easy five steps to make sure they are receiving the maximum benefits of their financial aid.
1. Fill out the application online. You can fill out the application for the Post 9/11 GI Bill at the
U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs website here.
2. Check to see if your school is participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program. If your tuition is not
completely covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill, check to see if your college is one
of the Yellow Ribbon Program participants. You cannot qualify for the Yellow Ribbon Program unless you receive 100% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill's
benefits (2+ years of service).
3.Fill out your school's Yellow Ribbon Program application. Your school may limit how many
students per year receive Yellow Ribbon Program benefits. If your school is a participant in the Yellow
Ribbon Program, filling out their application for receiving Yellow Ribbon Program benefits should be
done sooner rather than later to make sure you receive your financial aid.
4. Follow-up. If you do not receive timely response to your application(s), contact the V.A. or the
financial aid department of your school, respectively, to follow-up with your status.
5. Maintain high academic standing. Make sure to keep your grades up to continue to qualify for
the maximum financial aid benefits available.
