Volunteer Work
One way to get the most out of your college experience is to participate in an internship. Another is to study abroad. If you are looking for something that is less of a long-term commitment, or even a long-term project with a more flexible schedule, consider volunteer work.
Volunteer work allows a college student to get exposure to different fields of interest and participate in labor that they may later apply to the resume. Something as simple as a weekend trip to a local reef to help clean the beaches counts towards an extracurricular activity that shows you went above-and-beyond your degree during your college experience. Community service also leaves a college student with a feeling of reward.
Studying abroad may be combined together with volunteer work in third-world countries that need support. By offering service to a country in need, you can study abroad while also aiding others. This experience will help you stand out from other applicants when it comes time to pursue your career.
Your school is the first place to search for volunteer work, but that does not mean the search has to end there. If the school's career centers or activity clubs do not have volunteer work available that suits your interest, consider checking online or making a visit to your neighborhood community center.
